Mr. Bones Reviewed 2022-05-18 | ||
Like its title, DNWMIBIY is both long and whimsical. It contains a poe-purri of styles including Copeland-esq country hoe-down, trip-hop and shoegaze with Adrianne Lenker's warbally, laconic vocals backed by relatively spare instrumentation being the common factor in them (and perhaps the low-fi, Alan Lomax recording style). Ditto for the subject matter which includes vape pens, wild hairdos, potatoes and the damage we are doing to planet Earth. Looking for something playful and a bit zany to play on your indie/Americana show, give 'Dragon a spin. RIYL: Lord Huron, Courtney Barnett, Barr Brothers 1 Change - low key instrumentation accentuates AL's plaintive vocal styling (slow, 4:56)** 2 Time Escaping - semi-chaotic with plucked strings & exotic sound effects (med, 3:49)** 3 Spud Infinity - lovely, country toe-tapper opens with fiddle & mouth harp (med , 5:36)** 4 Certainty - fun duet with Buck Meek? over simple bass & snare drum (med, 3:09)* 5 Dragon New... - soft & ethereal with finger picked guitar & soft synths (soft, 4:44) 6 Sparrow - soft & dreamy homage to birds, builds to lovely harmony (slow , 5:12)* 7 Little Things - fun, mildly chaotic, shoegaze about falling in love in NYC (fast, 5:45) 8 Heavy Bend - (slow, 1:37) 9 Flower of Blood - shoegazey, about violence & intimacy with trippy guitar (med, 4:25) 10 Blurred View - melancholic, trip-hop with distorted guitar (fast , 4:07) 11 Red Moon - drop dead beautiful countryish track with bass & fiddle playing off AL's vocals (fast, 4:23)*** 12 Dried Roses - waltz with acoustic guitar & fiddle (slow, 2;36) 13 No Reason - dreampop with nice flute (med, 3:45) 14 Wake Me Up to Drive - soft & bouncy with accordion backing (med, 3:44) 15 Promise Is A Pendulum - vocals over finger picked guitar (slow, 4:13) 16 12,000 Lines - AL's vocals really shine with simple guitar & drums (slow, 2:59)*** 17 Simulation Swarm - trippy with interesting distorted guitar in break (med, 4:13)* 18 Love Love Love - ominous, Nick Cave sort of feel (med, 4:14) 19 The Only Place - AL playing finger picked guitar about the apocalypse (med, 3:15) 20 Blue Lightning - fun, country-ish toe tapper with fuzzy guitar (med, 3:52)** |
