The Dead Kenny-Gs Reviewed 2001-11-19 | ||
Acid jazz from the Ubiquity Records Cookin' compilations. Popular in the early '90s, acid jazz is not a rigidly defined genre. However based upon this album it's breakbeats and live musicians playing a hybrid funky soul jazz/electronic/dance/hip-hop. Some of the songs can be a bit smooth for my tastes (my only problem with acid jazz in general), but there a lot of great music that hits hard and be funky. Explore this record--it's a fine compilation and I pretty much liked it all, recommended tracks include CD1 tracks 1, 4, 5, 9, 11, and 13; CD2 tracks 1, 3, 5, 9, and 10 CD1 1) **Super groovy jazz loop under sax after brief intro 2) Guitar and piano, smooth fem vocal, sax and flute solos 3) Synthesizer and tenor sax 4) *Up-tempo, vibes with lots of percussion and snapping. 5) *Jazzy loops with spoken samples and trumpet 6) New Orleans funksters featuring Hammond and Sax 7) Prominent bass with Sax and Keys 8) Down-tempo sparse beat with quiet sax 9) *Loops with sax jam and female vocal sample 10) Mellow horns 11) *Up-tempo Ammons tune 12) Sparse rhythm to start into '70s style jazzfunk 13) *Guitar and boozy mute horn CD2 1) *Soul Jazz w/ guitar and sax 2) female vocal sample 3) *Up-tempo piano loop with flute jam 4) Guitar, percussion spoken word, 5) *Latin beat and bass, wide synthesizer 6) Ping pong sample, spoken word/scat vocals 7) Spacey vocal sample, reggae flavored with deep bass 8) Flute and keyboard on mellow piece 9) *Spoken intro, up-tempo drums and bass with guitar jamming 10) *Dark bass and sparse drum with echo-y guitar (?) 11) Relaxed lounge with trumpet, Hammond, guitar, drums. |
