A nice collection of reggae songs with socially relevant themes with a touch of Rastafarianism here and there. There are some pretty well-known singers here such as Capleton, Buju Banton, and Garnett Silk, all of whom are top notch. Though most of the tracks sound like traditional reggae, there’s enough variation in instruments, sounds to keep things from getting too repetitive. Focus here tends to be on head-nodding beats and pretty catchy singing. All are pretty decent. My picks…
3. ska-inflected reggae with horns throughout.
6. Capleton does a nice job here using electric percussion and a synthesizer for a nice combo of layered sounds.
7. sounds like old school r&b as much as reggae. A bit of a Marvin Gaye flavor.
10. Buju Banton’s distinctive husky voice. Play this!!!
11. Garnett Silk has a very characteristically crisp and refreshing voice. This song is a bit fast-paced, but very good, nonetheless.
13. salsa-like tune. Carribean mixed with latin beats.
18. very rich song with mixed male, female vocals. Nice synth background.
