BADAWI – Soldier of Midian
ROIR, 2002
USA - I haven’t heard the other albums by Raz Mesinai, aka “Badawi,” but I notice that his music is already filed in General and Hiphop. This one is in World, and it won’t take more than a few seconds of listening to discern why.
While it’s basically a collection of beats, the instruments used to create them are mostly Middle Eastern (zarb, bendir, darabuka, etc.), sampled from Badawi’s own live playing. These are tweaked and twisted into some deep and powerful loops (the theme is apparently war). It is said Badawi composed the score for the movie "Hellraiser 6", only to have it rejected as “too intense.” I believe it.
This year’s answer to Tabla Beat Science. Recommended, especially for BPM and experimental / freeform shows.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, 14
02. 4:16 – intense drums, with pipes & wails
03. 5:28 – freaky layering, driving bassline
04. 3:09 – great drum loop, low electronics
05. 2:05 – fast: high strums & deep drums
06. 4:06 – spinning pipes and heavy drums
08. 2:59 – low & tense, like a coiled snake
09. 3:28 – layered hand drums + fuzz bass
10. 3:55 – pulls you forward incessantly
11. 3:13 – deeeeep bass w/scattery drums
12. 4:39 – folksy sample, intriguing groove
13. 3:27 – random start, then deep groove
14. 3:55 – exotic strings, dubby bassline
