Solo improvisations on a variety of woodwinds. Very good, tuneful pieces. Rothenberg avoids the trap of near-silent air-through-the-horn playing, instead exploring particular tonalities in each piece -- either jazz-like or dissonant/abstract.

It's a two-CD set ... Disk 1 features clarinet, bass clarinet or shakuhachi (Japanese flute) on each track. The shakuhachi (1, 11) is nice and mystic, the bass clarinet (3,5,6,8) bouncy and tuneful.

Disk 2 is all alto sax, focusing quite a bit on sad, blues-tinged playing. Very nice, especially tracks 13 and 15 ... track 18 gets into less tonal, more experimental territory, leaping into long fluid runs.
