This is a wonderful journey through the roots of Latin American folk music. Some are modern recordings, some are decades old songs. The inclusion of #6 (Song of Orpheus) touches me. The only problem is that a few of the really old songs didn’t come out clearly. But this is a wonderful CD, an important compilation. Try: 1,3,6, 7,9,13,16,17

1. Cheery calypso & Afro-Cuban flavor
2. Flute folk song from the 50s
3. Lively percussion on this merengue
4. Vibrant traditional flutes
5. Soulful & dramatic singing
6. Legendary guitar solo – a bossa nova classic melody used in one of the greatest films ever made – “Black Orpheus” – what a delight to see it in this collection
7. Big band mariachi – Lively!
8. Brass band live in village festivities
9. From “Buena Vista Social Club” – rootsy Afro-Cuban song
10. Peruvian native accordion polka
11. Chilean folk – wistful guitar & singing
12. Marimbas – like the title says
13. “Psychedelic” polka? Conjunto style!
14. Really rough recording – marimba music
15. Big chorus in this Brazilian capoeira
16. Melodic fiddle playing, Hispanic (Albuquerque) style
17. Cheery children’s song – cute!
18. Corrido song (story song) – like a Mexican cowboy’s song
19. A lively accordion tango from S. America
20. Live recording of a rumba – lots of loose percussion
