Survivors of the “alt.country” “no-depression” non-movement of the mid 90’s, this is quite a beautiful cd incorporating folk, mountain and western components. Of course there is dark twangy “western-gothic” flavors throughout. The male vocs are a bit too in-your-face for my taste but the lush instrumentation (guits, hammonds, creative drums/perc, strings, banjo even) more than make up for it. Good horse-shit! All tracks good, pick any.

1) dark slow, sparse, distant strings, Hammond creeps in as brushed drums become more evident
2) banjo gives this a decidedly mountain folk flavor, lyrics about a horse in this traditional song
3) minimal marching snare drum with pulsing bass and twangy guits, dark, Nick Cave’ish delivery and tone
4) banjo and dark cello, Hank Williams morose ditty, slow swingy western waltz
5) upbeat folky bluegrass, blow your jug son, swing yer pardner, Carter Family song
6) slow dark goth feel, another Bad Seeds feeling one
7) psyche droney with bowed bass and noise, male chorus a la Nick Cave, like a slow church dirge
8) distinct Nick Cave cinematic feel despite sparseness of gut guit, after 2 minutes it picks up to galloping western feel
9) minor, acous guit w/ Spanish, exotic feel, madredeus, strings, vocs ruin it 10) deep waltz mazurka, has irish Cajun feel, vocs in Creole (?)
