A variety of Albanian music, tracks varying from strings to flutes to vocals. Field recordings taken in 1979-80 with a good quality sound. Folky feel overall, lots of Balkan sounds (obviously) and some surprising influences from other "world" musics.
Liner notes detail the history of the country.
1- Vocals and guitars(?): Pastoral feel
2- Flutes: floaty stuff, like Peruvian flutes and an oboe-like reed
3- Vocals: Slow reverent a capella, some nice exotic harmonies
4- Solo female vocal, quiet/peaceful
5- "Neo-folk," female vocals over a full band. Cinematic, minor key.
6- Strings: Stern, classical violin. Ends happy.
7- Almost Klezmer sound! Clarinet with strummed lute/guitars. Slow.
8- Strings: violin soloist has a fast, almost Irish sound
9- Bagpipes! No, really, bagpipes!
10- Lutes: Fast melodies from a group of players. Piccolos join in later for a big festive sound.
11- Lutes/mandolins: Fast, skipping
12- Vocals: Burly tenor fishermen, operatic
13- Asian plucked strings, fast complex rhythms
14- Vocals: Big, slow, dramatic ensemble
15- Lutes: Fast, folky strumming
16- Flutes: Chaotic soft energy, occasionally danceable
