MAQAMS OF SYRIA Arc Music, 2002 A fine collection of field recordings, most made between 1955-1960. The Arabic maqam is similar to an Indian raga: it is a melody-type set to a particular scale. The players improvise, especially in the opening taqsim section (like the alap in a raga), but only within the strict rules of the maqam they are playing. Several tracks include vocal taqsims and sung renditions of classical poetry. Instruments include the qanun (zither), oud, ney (flute), violin, buzuk (lute), and an assortment of drums. All nice. Fo's Picks: 1, 6, 7, 9 (groups); 5, 8 (solos) 01. 12:14 - very slow and graceful, with moaning vocal, elaborate qunun, a little oud 02. 5:35 - lively, exotic-sounding qanun/oud duet; bouncy rhythm near end 03. 5:25 - improvised solo for six-hole flute; haunting, birdlike, many pauses 04. 2:33 - short improvisation for violin: well-handled, rather sad sound 05. 4:02 - solo buzuk: rather lonely, but goes through several melodic changes 06. 6:30 - high flute, then strained vocal; dervish rhythm + chorus starts halfway in 07. 3:34 - light and airy flute over midtempo dervish drums 08. 8:01 - uptempo but lengthy improvisation for solo oud; impressive 09. 6:06 - upbeat dervish instrumental (flute + drums), more accessible than #6 [Fo] - 4/2/03 |
