Debut CD for singer-songwriter. Pretty female voice on gentle vocal-focused tracks. Would classify as folk-pop, with much more folk, less pop. Most songs are weighty and powerful, and have a slow, tense, sometimes even ominous, atmosphere. The lyrics are generally personal and intimate. The music is fairly sparse and features some wonderful gently-placed use of African drums on several tracks. There are a couple of spoken word tracks (6,13) that didn’t work as well for me. Note FCC on 5. Recommend 2 for typical sound, but also 3,4,8,10.
1 – sad 30-sec cello instrumental // 2 – typical sound, poignant, sparse, stark, slow, pretty guitar and light intermittent African drums // 3 – acoustic guitar and vocals, percussion, steamy, tense atmosphere created // 4 – more intermittent drums, slow-med, more uplifting pace and beat // 5 – FCC “fucked” with 2:05 rem, sparse, very intermittent but powerful and ominous drum beat // 6 – speaking with spooky windy clangy background noise // 7 – simple slow beat, accordion, more relaxed // 8 – bigger beat, slow-med, pop // 9 – wandering pace in verses, chorus more straightforward, fast African drum solo at end // 10 – simple beat, sweet lyrics about love and commitment, pretty // 11 – sad piano and vocal combination // 12 – steady slow pace with cello //
13 – long (nearly 8 min), speaking over clangy tinny shuffling background sounds, builds ominously // 14 – lighter, slow, simple, sweet, last 3 min is fading music with chimes and cello
