Manilal Nag: Raga Nat Bhairav Label: India Archive
This CD features two different takes on the Raga Nat Bhairav, both performed by Manilal Nag on the surbahar and the sitar. The difference between the surbahar and the sitar is like a cello versus a violin. Track 1 is a solo performance on the surbahar, and it’s quite good. Tracks 2-4 is the Raga Nat Bhairav again (but not identical to #1 – it has different improvisations), and it is performed with tablas and sitar. Try: 1,4.
1. A long, tabla-free raga piece performed solely on the surbahar. The structure (alap, jor, & jahala) starts w/ a slow & unstructured pace (the alap), then becomes more structured and faster paced. The tone of the surbahar differs from the sitar; it’s deeper.
2. This is an abbreviated alap (introduction) of the Raga Nat Bhairav, no tablas, only sitar.
3. The main part of the raga is presented w/ sitar and tablas, maintaining the melody that’s established in the alap (previous track).
4. Dramatic conclusion to the Raga Nat Bhairav – the sitar is fast and furious and finishes with powerful flourishes.
