Somber, frequently beautiful songs on acoustic guitar and voice, with occasional accompaniment.
Lyrics range from abstract phrases to slice-of-life observations and Hersh's voice here is a bit gruff but always committed. All are good - really! - but my faves are:

2. Violin backing lends sweetness
3. Blues progressions
6. Dry, forlorn slide sets a stately tempo
7. Beautiful buildup to majestic climax ? well, as majestic as acoustic guitars get
8. "That baby's so simian / I guess we never evolved completely / You can see it in me" - brilliant;
violin and piano and guitar build up to a rocking finish
