LAMBERT
Improvised trios in a jazz vein, performed by two different groups. What they share in common is Lambert, the drummer. Each piece is based on one of his drawings -- the drawings, and detailed explanations, are in the booklet.

Very musical pieces (except #9). Rarely flashy but worth the effort.

PIANO/BASS/DRUMS: Crisp pieces with a traditional jazz sound:
1- Careful and dark feel, with lots of piano tricks.
4- A brisk jazz walk, interrupted by occasional slow-moving abstraction
7- Dramatic, gets into some nice sparkling piano
8- Staggery bebop
11- Cool little shuffle

BASS/SAX/DRUMS: More experimental but still toneful and jazzy, with richly melodic bass from Barre Phillips:
2- Slowly progressing, gets briefly angry later on
3- Starts with a nice loping bass solo. Second half aggressive and choppy.
5- Slow washes of sound
6- Goes through fast and slow phases with good interaction
9- Groany scrapes and squeaks. Quiet acoustic noise.
10- Wandering and abstract. Quiet spoken part at the end.
