This album blends old wave with new wave; the keyboard-drenched, art-school pop of the ’80s shines through on their debut album and grants listening ears with unique sounds and explorations of well-known instruments. The enchanting caress of Emily’s voice compliments each track in just the right ways, giving the release an overall sense of rising stardom. A wonder addition to any Indy/Pop collection, and seeing them live, I hear, is quite an experience! Originating in Toronto, Emily Haines (vocals) and James Shaw (guitars, vocals) gave birth to what we know as Metric. Picking up a bassist (Josh Winstead) and drummer (Joules Scott-Key) on their way to LA, Metric rooted and gave us an incredible mingling of sounds. potty-mouth tracks: none detected (note: rating numbers are out of 10 and following each track description) 1. IOU – slow and fast parts; seductive vocals; good steady beats (7). 2. Hustle Rose – same line is sung over and over; quiet mood picks up a bit (6). 3. Succexy – 80s sounding electronics; very pop’y (8). 4. Combat Baby – poetic; instruments go off; great radio song (9). 5. Calculation Theme – mellow electronics; melancholic vocals (7). 6. Wet Blanket – catchy beat; quick vocals; another great radio song (8). 7. On A Slow Night – distorted guitar for intro; quiet vocals; moves on to bass’y drum line (7). 8. The List – bass’y intro; solid beat moves in and remains; some synths (8). 9. Dead Disco – long bass intro; dance beat (8). 10. Love Is A Place – Quiet, short song (7). review courtesy of LadyDev |
