Babatunde Olatunji, Healing Session
This is a more contemplative, meditative collection than Babatunde’s previous releases. Recorded in 1992, Babatunde’s intent was to create a work, based on Yoruba religion, which helps us relax and get in touch with our internal rhythm and faith. The first 5 cuts are low-keyed while the last three are more energetic. This session includes only four drummers so the individual rhythms are distinctive, however, the energy of the recording is lost on small speakers. Check #5 & 7
1. Emi Ka Sai D’Arugbo 7:11 begins with a vocal affirmation of longevity
2. Adura 10:37 chanting, mixture of drums, bells, marimba type instruments and mbira (thumb piano)
3. Edunmare 4:18 Babatunde leads the singing.
4. Ara Mi Le 6:07 nice drumming in the background but a bit too much of the ‘Ara Mi Le’ chant.
5. ** Mystery of Love 5:56 slow, rhythmic, drums, bells and rain stick
6. Watusi 6:27 powerful bass drums, no chanting
7. ** Nene 8:32 opens with an invocation followed by a nice layer of strong drumming, talking drum included. The most energetic and complex track.
8. Primitive Fire 8:24 no vocals, first 2:17 simple, the pace then slowly picks up and develops. Good tribute to Babatunde’s mastery.
