Upbeat and jaggedly swinging avant-jazz, with a hint of menace to every track. This is great stuff. The tempos might not be super fast and blurry, but the energy level is way up there.|
Most of the tracks are typical Berne suites, 10 to 30 minutes long, with fast, jumbly written themes spaced between free-form improvising. It's catchy and toe-tapping in an avant-garde way.
The "hint of menace" is the combination of Craig Taborn's gloopy, spacey keyboards and Marc Ducret's atonal guitar jangle. Tom Rainey, Berne's favorite drummer these days, tosses in coolly fast and restrained playing.
1- Dives straight in: Mid/fast herky-jerky theme typical of Berne.
2- Slow drifty start w/some loud passionate wailing from Berne. Just after 10:00, turns into spiky aggression with splintery guitar, then a drum solo and a slowly lingering chaotic activity.
Slow but loud. Ends mid/slow and strong.
3- Starts fast and dryly sparse, kind of a sarcastic groove. Ends big and swirly.
1- Floaty ambient drones
2- Active, jumbly start with an ecstatic, hyper sax solo.
3- Midtempo wandering crawl, a relaxed-mood encore. Includes a very sparse, quiet improv segment. Starts and ends with long applause
