Judah Bauer (John Spencer Blues Explosion) sounds lyrically almost introspective singer/songwriter on this is second solo release. Consistent though is a pleasant mildly swampy indie rock reminiscent of early 70’s Stones, bluesy alt-rock, even somehow Howie Gelb/Calexico sincerity. Just guit, bass, drums, piano and his very likable vocals up front. Finally, lyrics that speak to us all (even generating a raised eyebrow and smile from my normally “deaf to kzsu” lab-bay partner). All songs great, check them out.
1) upbeat rhythm but dark tone, great feel 2) slow, w/ hammond organ, dark, epic lyricism
3) stones feel, fun, all cylinders w/ maracas
4) upbeat feel again, seques out of the stones feel
5) swampy blues slide guit, nice
6) ¾ smarmy piano blues exploding- great!
7) beautiful backwards instrumentation w/ his great vocs/lyrics/melodies that are getting better and better
8) mid paced near alt-country feel (ugh, I hate that term), strummy and balladlike, lyric centered
9) upbeat country swamp
10) slower piano ballad, reminds me of an early 70’s ballad, pretty- great commentary on working 8-5, life’s dissatisfactions
11) slow dark guit bass drums vocs ballad, weird and dark how it goes nowhere, wow!
