Album Review
Reviewed 2003-12-26
One of my new favorite sad bands, Brightblack are originally from Alabama, then Kentucky, and now live in West Marin, California. Playing beautiful, slow bluesy folk songs and singing with a blissful sadness, they evoke a similar mood as Mazzy Star and Bonnie Prince Billy, whom they toured with. The instruments here are acoustic guitar, Rhodes piano, drums and pedal steel guitar; the moody vocals are led by a boy and backed by gorgeous echoey female vocals. Their out of print album AlaCaliTucky will hopefully be re-released soon. Think also of the Cowboy Junkies. Both songs are great.

1. slow rhythm w/ wonderful sustained vocals.
2. mostly acoustic guitar and pedal steel. serene.
