RICHARD GALLIANO SEPTET – Piazzolla Forever Dreyfus, 2003 TANGO – French jazz/tango/folk/musette accordionist Galliano pays tribute to his hero, the mighty Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla. Recorded in concert, and joined by piano, two violins, viola, cello, and bass, Galliano does a fine job of evoking the emotional depth, complex arrangements, and sudden mood changes of Piazzolla’s “new tango” movement. There is, unfortunately, a certain “European” analytical reserve that keeps the music from plunging fully over the edge. Still, this is one of the better Piazzolla tributes of the past few years. Beware of lengthy applause at end of tracks. Try any track! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11 1. 5:36 – surging rhythms alternate with stark melancholy 2. 6:34 – strong piano/strings interplay, very sad w/ a classical ending 3. 6:30 – heavy, rhythmic: husky violin, light bandoneon, creepy ending 4. 6:37 – layered, uptempo, with a cinematic feel, then slow chugging 5. 5:58 – romantic ballad turns weepy, a relatively straightforward track 6. 3:27 – very well-known tune, swift and dramatic, like a chase scene 7. 6:24 – solo accordion: noodling intro, but then it turns passionate 8. 3:23 – tragic original, flows seamlessly, nice ensemble work 9. 3:17 – cool strutting rhythm, mostly violins & piano (introduction of the band) 11. 7:49 – complex: uptempo, then melancholy, tangly, slashing end 12. 6:09 – starts bright & perky, slows way down, comes full circle [ Fo ] - 2/3/04 |
