Kathryn Todd Reviewed 2004-08-12 | ||
Early Beatles-style songwriting frosted with 70's era guitars (rhythmic, distorted, loud enough to dominate the songs). Male singer delivers melodic vocals with lots of cute key changes. It's all done so skillfully that it seems churlish to point out that songwriting isn’t the most interesting I’ve ever heard nor the lyrics the most profound. No FCC's. Play this if you're looking for good clean guitar-heavy fun. 1: Plenty of power chords and catchy riffs. (2:38) 2: Retro. (2:01) 3: Low male vocals on chorus, subtly jangly guitars. ~120 bpm (2:46) 4: Disco rhythms, murky guitars, abrupt ending. (2:31) 5: Quieter murky acoustic guitars. High male/falsetto voice. Slow (~90 bpm) throughout, with especially lugubrious electric guitar solo. Several seconds of silence at the end. (3:41) 6: Driving rhythmic guitars, clappy percussion. Upbeat lyrics: "It's all right / it's okay / It's everything I want / when I think about you" (2:39) 7: Growly rhythmic guitars, rhyming lyrics. ~120 bpm. "Heedless headless paradise." Maybe for you, dude. (2:12) 8: Mellow spare strummy guitar. Steady drumbeat. "If I thought I ever hurt you / I would try a suicide." Lyrics waver between contrition and anger. Simple, boring, repetitive music. (5:29) 9: Loud growly guitars with "na na na" backup vocals submerged beneath. (3:01) 10: "Hey / She's my runaway / she left her home when I was away" Simple steady drums (~120 bpm). Nice distorted short guitar solo. (2:15) 11: More early sixties surfer-rock feel: loud croony male backup vocals, slightly growly rhythmic guitars, steady beat. (3:16) -Kathryn |
