Billed as “a musical time capsule of Havana before the revolution,” this CD was recorded in 1955 and features wonderful music, well played (especially by Oscar “Floresita” Velasco whose trumpet is a force of nature). There are no guitars or bass, so it’s all trumpet/percussion/vocals on these congas & rumbas which makes them less lyrical then we’re used to…but great stuff. *1. Fast percussion, big trumpet, chorus. Wild energy at end. *2. Another fast conga w/that huge, brassy trumpet. *3. Warm male vocals in a light & swaying rumba. 4. Lazy rumba w/some nice percussion. 5. Choral & percussion-driven rumba. 6. A brassy conga w/chorus & drums. 7. Very much like #6, but that was a liberal conga & this is for the conservatives. *8. Trumpet/perc/bells/chorus. Conga. *9. A sweet, relaxed rumba w/strong male vocal. 10. Male vox & chorus plus percussion on this rumba. *11.Good male vocals/chorus & drums on this relaxed track. *12. Trumpet/percussion/chorus conga. That trumpet is amazing. 6/2004 |
