Ever wonder what you're rice-krispies are telling you while you crunch away at them? Well, look no further, boys and girls, because Wajid Yaseen (aka 2nd Gen) has the answer. With Flicknives, 2nd brings us electronic music that's crunchy and at times laced with some hip-hop beats (what d'ja think I was going to say---acid?--heh-heh).
Having garnered some buzz as “Fun-Da-Mental's” bass player and with his debut EP Noise Sculptures, he keeps expanding his musical horizons. And while Flicknives is a bold statement, it's going to be interesting to see what he comes up with next.
the good: electronic music that makes you think
the bad: some tracks can get repetitive
the ugly: nuthin'
potty-mouth tracks: none detected
(note: rating numbers are out of 10 and following each track description)
1.Evox: ominous sounds&strings; horror/suspense movie (7) 2.Middle Finger Motif: crunchier sounds; distorted electronics (8) 3.Flicknives: “hollow” drums on intro; distorted sounds and samples follow (8) 4.Post Modern Martyrs: song w/ steady beat; vox is distorted; sax in b/g is cool (9) 5.Hex: eerie intro ala “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”; drops hip-hop beats in afterward (9) 6.Paper Veins: Bells, heavy synths on intro (9) 7.Non-Plussed: video-game intro music; nice beats and good samples (9.5) 8.Sliding Into Stereotypes: muted sounds with clear rhyming (7) 9.Some Dirt You Just Can't Wash Away: more video-game music; cool beats (8) 10.Vector Song: noisy intro w/ samples; bit redundant (7)
