Oh yeah! With members from Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, Alaska! combines classic 70s rock (of the post 60s psych lineage: Neal Young, Cream, Led Zeppelin; maybe a bit of Floyd and CCR???) with 60s British psych rock (the Kinks). Boisterous compositions as guitars and vocals unfold with "epic" transitions and progressions. This really dances on a very fine line. Grungy but jangly guitars married to a Flaming Lips-like bitter but sweet psych vocal approach. Kind like bringing power-pop, psych and classic rock all together. Oh... and if those guitars don't exactly cut it as pure 70s rock, it's the proto-punk/new wave influence of Velvet Underground (hear those guitar chops in the chorus of track 4? total Lou Reed/John Cale). Interesting to dissect ah? Now just dig!
Play: 1, 5, 4.
1. Love this track. Epic and powerful. Power popish jangly guitars. Awesome transitions to Kinks-like psych vocal melodies. Great!
2. Early 90s grungy rock feel. Powerful Neal Young and blues rock-based guitar work (Cream, Zeppelin). Ethereal and melodic psych vocals.
3. Sparse dissonance. Mid tempo drone building to a swelling groovy chorus. Bitter sweet psych vocal melodies.
4. Starts soft and quiet. Builds up to psych vocal groove with Velvet Underground-ish guitar strumming. Dissonant and a bit angular guitar solo in the break.
5. Crooning organ in the background. Very touching. A good taste of Sebadoh & Flaming Lips.
