Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2004-05-16 | ||
Like a calmer Keith Jarrett, Kimbrough spins piano pieces with pleasant melodies and some tangly tricks embedded in the soloing. This is a piano trio disk with a very "nice" sound overall and plenty of creativity in a mellow kind of vein. Also check out the Herbie Nichols Project, which features these guys (and more) playing the neglected compositions of Nichols, a neglected '60s jazzman. 1- Midtempo. Casually jaunty. 2- Slow, relaxed 3- Rolling midtempo. Lots of Keith Jarrett sound here. 4- Mid/slow. Dramatic and tumbling with slowly free-falling drums. 5- Jangly. Fast bass solo early on. 6- Slow 7- Mellow and warm, nice. 8- Playful and a bit off-kilter 9- More Jarrett feel; mid/fast rolling based on a nice little theme 10- Mid/slow. Serious tumbling and (soft) crashing. |
