WILLIAM WARFIELD – “Something Within Me”
Delmark, 2004
This is a unique document. William Warfield, famed singer of African-American spirituals (best known for his work in “Showboat” and “Porgy and Bess”), teamed up with Bill Carter’s dixieland band in 2000 for a special concert in San Francisco. The day before, they recorded this great set of old-time gospel tunes and New Orleans jazz. Warfield, aged 79 at the time, played piano and sang with Carter’s septet on 9 tracks, then the band added 8 more (some in a separate session). It's a fine tribute to Warfield, who passed away in 2002.
Fo’s picks: vocal – 3, 8, 13, 14 inst – 4, 5, 6, 15, 16
1. nice instrumental shuffle, midtempo
2. churchy bounce: solo voice & piano
3. slow hymn, good clarinet, trumpet
4. upbeat march, nice clarinet, trombone
5. lazy intro, then a sweet sloooow drag
6. another slow drag, clarinet feature
7. powerful vocal + piano stride
8. slow and soulful solo, much feeling
9. upbeat stroll, good rhythm section
10. celebration: strong voice + full band
11. low & easy: solos for trumpet, guitar
12. gentle gospel, simple & heartfelt
13. excellent: deep and powerful solo
14. solo hymn starts gentle, gets strong
15. a swinging celebration, solos for all
16. N.O. funeral march, slow then fast
17. “Amazing Grace”: beautiful dignity
