Schuller’s quartet has been one of the most consistently interesting groups recently and this disc is no exception. The ensemble here doubles the size of the group for more of an “orchestral” sound. The longer pieces have a more formal composed intro rather than the head/solo/head form. There’s still plenty of great solos here though, and Feldman especially gets a lot of time in the spotlight to excellent effect.

*1. Formal into, then funky solos
*2. Restrained bluesy feel, with cool solos
3. Chaotic jumble
4. Quiet, mellow start, then speedy solos
*5. Soft start w/ guitar, then funky solos
6. Slow, methodic improv
*7. First movement has lots of violin, the second a big band improv, then the last part is more subdued with violin again leading the way
8. Fast jumble (continuation of #3)
