The finest offering yet from Vandermark’s mainstay ensemble. The group still has the solid, funky post-bop sound, but Vandermark’s writing has gotten a little more adventurous and the players here are more than up to the task. The dueling sax leads of Vandermark and Rempis play off each other superbly, and the studio engineer seems to have given them a wonderfully fat sound on the disc. Bishop on the gets some great solos in on the trombone and newcomer Daisy on the drums sounds like he’s been here for years. Play this!
*1. Slow, heavy
**2. Fast and funky
3. Sparse quiet rumblings
4. Speedy bop alternates with slow meditation
*5. Slow bluesy ballad
*6. Busy free jazz, with sparse drum solo in middle
*7. Rumbling start, takes off around (-16:00) with a loping beat
