Much anticipated retrospective of seminal highly influential NYC art post punk band that is synonymous with the term “no wave”. Clanging discordant guitars, disjunct tribal beats, noisy minimal synth and desperate non-“vocals” create a form of anti-music so heavily embraced as of late that you’d think that we’ve entered a time warp (see new bands Ex-Models, Number, ). Though this band was the brainchild of Arto Lindsay I dare you to find anything these recordings have in common with his recent a-file fave. Not very prolific, this CD includes all their studio recording plus unreleased and live material. Totally abstract, whacked, an NYU art student’s wet dream.
1) simple quintessential DNA beat, synth, noise guit and “vocs”
2) slow abstract
3) classic track, slow swingy
4) almost thrashy
5) another classic w/ slow mid beat that picks up
6) more driving, almost song-like, melodic
7) from their record: weird near tribal messed’upness
8) more bizarreness from record
9) Blonde Redhead took their moniker from the title of this tribal ditty, Sonic Youth lifted its essence and invented indie rock, or at least changed it forever
10) abstract, halting, cool
11) bizarre tribalness
12) slow halting, powerful bass notes and drum bursts
13) mostly bass feedback and free-drums
14) looping bass line, almost drony
15) bass centered brief
16) slow bass solo, dark and brooding
17) rumbling driving bass w/ noise guit
18) turns almost melodic
19) bursts, w/ slow plod, noisey
20) disjunct start, turns pounding thrashy
21) almost melodic, rhythmic, w/ a melody
22) tribal, typical
23) crowd noise, weird synth, abstract guits, tribal
24) live abstract, free-no-wave, bordering on noise
25) plodding excellent trademark w/ vocs
26) tribal, spastic, great
27) FCC dark and weird, slow “get out of here, go fuck yourself” at about 30 seconds left
28,29) upbeat and scattered, thrashy
30) slow tribal sparse
31) dense, low fi noise onslaught
32) very sparse, abstract, sounds
