Album Review

Blues-drenched punky rock but with a messy, yes swampy, aspect. Many of the riffs are insistently mind-pounding. The lyrics are a bit on the topical side, the main sub rosa topic being what a shit-hole Cleveland is. (Interestingly, the booklet shows a headline that reports that Cleveland is a pit for children, a point that much was made of during the recent Ohio electoral contest.) (Interestingly2, there was a band in Youngstown, Ohio named Sister Ray a while back. They sounded somewhat similar to the New Lou Reeds. Hmmm.)

1. Whiny and repetitive blues riff with primal drum; excellent
2. Upbeat rocker; best moment is the plaintive wail toward the end
3. Galloping rhythm and some more of that fine whooping vox
4. Acoustic strum and singing
5. Quasi-reggae chukka-chukka with lyrics about being different
6. The kind of chipper, semi-competent pop song that leaves you thinking the band is either balanced wonderfully at the precipice of pop stardom or else just thinks more of its powers of attraction than is justified by their talent
7. Riffy shuffle
8. Rockabilly roots with a driving low-drum rhythm, cool guitar runs and strained vox; beautiful
9. Slower and more intricate guitar runs
10. Sort of tedious wankery … which I guess goes with the lyrical theme
11. Wow, the worst rap ever; mercifully short
12. Folksy, long
