This indie-pop songwriter wears his heart flamboyantly on his sleeve while keeping his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. The lyrics are fun and fairly witty, though he often runs the risk of being too precious. And his emo-ness can be too reminiscent of such luminaries as Dashboard (lord preserve us), boys who feel like rhyming their catharses somehow makes them meaningful. But the hooks can be sinfully enjoyable, and the songs are consistently well crafted. If you like whiny boys who are too intelligent for their own good, this could well be the album for you. Recommended tracks: 9, 7, 6, 1, 5 *1. Upbeat number; fun with backing vocals! 2. Piano and acoustic guitar, a bit softer. 3. Quieter, building. Nice horns come in, but the song drags on at 7 minutes 4. Strings, softer vocals. *5. Jaunty, less whinyness in the vocals. Fun! *6. Cute backing vocals, vitriolic lyrics. *7. Darker, slower, even more vitriolic lyrics 8. Upbeat, mediocre pop *9. Synth backing, start/stop with cute vocal line 10. Rockier pop. FCC: fuck |
