Tribute to New Orleans jazz. Dr. John sounds great as usual but sometimes gets obscured behind all the trappings: strings (1), choir (2, 3), special guests like Mavis Staples (2,3), Randy Newman (10), Willie Nelson (11).
If you don't know Dr. John: Expect lots of slow-tempo, spirited bluesy jazz, a very "roots" sound, some great blues piano splashes, and a gruff Tom Waits-like voice.
- Slow and cinematic, with strings
- "Saints" done in funeral dirge mode.
- Upbeat gospel w/Dirty Dozen Brass Band
- Story about a voodoo queen, with slow mellow backdrop
- Piano/trumpet duet, slowish and warm. Tribute to Louis Armstrong.
- Midtempo soul, a slow strut.
- Midtempo, party feel with lots of shouting
- '70s street funk feel. Cool monologue
- Cute tango, midtempo with an almost Calypso air
- Randy Newman, happy uptempo
- Midtempo blues; nice guitar solo
- Midtempo. Gritty feel.
- Midtempo. Scratch viola solo from Gatemouth Brown.
- Slowish barroom shuffle
- Playful track on organ. Classic tune.
- Stompy swampy blues
- BB King and Willie Nelson and Dirty Dozen Brass Band
- Slow and cinematic, with strings and vocals
