Guus Janssen – Dancing Series

Dutch pianist Janssen leads a mini orchestra of big-name improvisers in a set of quirky composed, modern-classical sounding jazz pieces. At first, this seems more serious than other Amsterdam-style stuff, but there’s a lot of sly humor beneath even the most serious parts.

1. Plinking start, followed by very fast solos
2. Delicate piano under trombone solo, then things get more abstract
*3. Quiet start belies the unrestrained frenzy that starts up ~3 min in.
*4. Galloping fanfare fades into mystery
*5. Bouncy straight jazz
6. Acoustic guitar rumblings
*7. Bleating brass leads to speedy groove
**8. Fun jazzy groove
