Denis Colin Trio – Something in Common

Interesting interpretations of soul and jazz tracks with a political bent done by Colin’s trio of clarinet, cello and hand percussion. The grooves are mellow and understated, which give the poets and singers lots of space to present the lyrics in a powerful way. The trio can turn it up though, and the gospel-style tracks with everyone blazing away are definitely highlights. Excellent!

1. Light reggae w/ vox about Amadou Diallo (shot by NYC cops)
*2. Loping jazzy swing
*3. As metal as a clarinet and cello can get. With sung-spoken vox
**4. Soulful rendition of the classic, sparse in a Nina Simone-ish way
5. Languorous post-coital blues
6. Mellow world feel
**7. Gospel free jazz
8. Soulful slow Stevie Wonder
*9. Closing prayer
