Illogicist – Subjected (Crash Music)
Technical death metal. Fairly brutal, but the emphasis is on writing complex, yet catchy, songs with intricate drumming, confusing riffs, and numerous odd-time signatures. Growled vocals, of course, and a love of the Death-patented stop-altogether-in-the-middle-of-a-riff-and-then-continue-as-if-nothing-happened trick. Very neat stuff, extremely enjoyable. I read someone describing this as treading the thin line between great and incredible. Pretty damn accurate, in my opinion.
Tracks:
1) Intro, quiet, only 25 sec.
2) FCC (“fucking”) at –4:06, but otherwise an excellent song that does its best to channel Schuldiner.
3) Choppy guitar riff and constant double bass drums, a more melodic Meshuggah.
4) Galloping NWOSDM, riff-heavy, almost power metal-like, but with a killer lyrical concept.
5) Hypcorisy-like, doomy, with a very eerie feel to the whole thing, and some amazing guitar runs. Seriously, even Chuck (R.I.P.) would be thoroughly impressed.
6) A lot more change-ups here, from the crazy tempos to the different guitar styles, and some intense harmonization between the two guitarists. Also, the bass goes wild!
7) Short, galloping instrumental with some odd stop-start patterns.
8) Whoa, epic! Major Death worship, but seriously, this song is a gem. Too many different parts to describe in such limited space.
9) Mid-tempo churner with short bursts of speed and a pretty thrashy feel. More amazing runs and harmonization and soloing.
