Album Review
Craig Matsumoto
Reviewed 2004-10-24
Peaceful improvisations from a trio of sax, bass, and viola. Abstract work that's often fast-paced but has a sour/dark feel. That's because Joe and Mat are into the "microtonal" thing, where the octave is split into more than the usual number of notes; some passages sound "out of tune" on the first listen. Nice stuff overall, with some intense moments.

Recorded in a stone cathedral in France, so the slower tracks have some nice reverberations.

1- Slow, meditative.
2- Fast, fluttery work. Gets aggressive.
3- Gutteral, gnarled saxophone solo.
4- Mostly slow. Starts quiet and serene; gets louder near the end
5- Viola-bass duet. Serene; picks up steam near the end.
6- Almost bluesy sax tones. A medium-paced jazzy romp. Ends slow.
7- Small, quiet chirps
8- Quick and fluttery, upbeat
9- A healthy jumble. Starts busy but slow, catches on when Mat gets into some open-string slashing on viola. It's 15 minutes long, so it has the obligatory slow segment, too. Ends with screaming, burly sax.
10- Calm
