Hope for Agoldensummer – Heart of Art (diy) Rootsy southern (Georga) front porch music but with a twist. It’s very dark and gothic and throws in some post rock sounds. That might sound like a ridiculous description but that’s as close as I can come. It’s not really folk music but there are touches of folk. It’s not really alt-country but there are touches of alt-country. The vocals are very soulful. The music is mostly acoustic, sparse, and dark. Fronted by sisters, one on vocals and the other on guitar. Think Tara Jane O’Neil or Nina Nastasia. **1. Slow, sparse, gothic. It gets ever so close to a slow swing. The full band comes in halfway through **2. Slightly blues-y guitar and dual female vocals. Slight post-rock feel. 3. Starts with cello and simple guitar picking. This eventually turns into a pop folk sound with some unique vocals. **4. Great minimal percussion, slight circus feel, surreal, and dark. 5. Piano and moaning vocals. **6. Some of the first electronic instruments. Rock. Droning, somewhat angry. 7. Some sort of organ or toy piano along with some other sounds. This changes to mostly vocals and quiet guitar. **8. Dark jangle-y rock. Still dark, just more forceful. 9. Busier and rambling. 10. Quiet guitar and cello that changes into a somewhat goofy march with something that sounds like a penny whistle and bombastic drums. 11. Sparse slide guitar playing scraping cello. 12. More of a story. A complete chorus with what sounds like the whole band singing at the end. Uplifting. Great stuff!! -mph |
