Dave Douglas – Mountain Passages

Excellent group work from Douglas’s brand new label. This features parts of the group on the Bow River Falls album that came out last year, but this is focused on the composition rather than the improvisation. There’s a range of nice textures here, all with old-school Americana feel: lush, tender ballads, bounding marches and late night blues swing. Definitely some excellent stuff here, hopefully this signals an end to the disastrous dabbling with electronics he started a few albums back.

**1. Funereal march builds nicely
2. Slow moving bluesy harmonies
*3. Loud, crazy march
**4. Bluesy soloing over relaxed swing
*5. Nice tuba bounce builds to solid swing
6. Tender ballad
*7. Driving composition
8. Slow but intense
*9. Great modern swing
10. Majestic slow statement
*11. Playful bounce
12. Mellow, dark mood
*13. Cinematic finale
