Album Review
Captain Dee
Reviewed 2005-01-30
KZSU, I present to you, one of my very favorite albums of 2004!
I explicitly wrote to the artist/label to get permission to burn this for the station.

Melodic, intricate (but accessible) glitch-hop from Merck Records, all with a slightly sinister vibe – the kind of music you might wake up to in the ghostly afterlife right after you die. Landau's electronic melodies are at simultaneously haunting and beautiful, and the beats are fucking infectious. Fans of everything from experimental hip-hop to downtempo electronica should love this.

* Highly recommended! *

Favorite Tracks:
Everything is excellent, but Track 3 is the standout. Also try: 2, 4, 6, 8.

- Captain Dee, Jan. 2005

1. Cute (but weird) melody over scampering noises and strong beat. (5:36)
**2. Somehow, the title ("Good Morning Gravity") is perfect. Hard-hitting mechanical beat, tweaked piano chords, ethereal melody. (4:47)
***3. DOPE DOPE DOPE DOPE! Spooky intro, then an absolutely monster breakdown with gorgeous melody and a heavy "gothic" feel. You can totally picture Dracula rocking this shit. (3:13)
*4. Dreamy synth washes, beat & full song gradually come to the forefront. Muted piano and crystalline melody finally join the fray. Lovely, just lovely. (5:30)
5. Clumsy beat over distant, echo-y melody. Quiet end blends into Track 6. (1:48)
**6. Strong hip-hop beat (complete with touches of turntablism), low electronic warbles, old horror-movie-esque chorus of "ahs." Creepy background ambience and lonely melody. Absolutely sick.
7. Ominous melody & fast-paced mechanical beat. Eventually slows down to slightly trippy pace. (3:38)
**8. Warm videogame-ish melody and bass. Devastating beat breaks in halfway through. Holy jebus! (4:37)
9. Semi-amorphous chiming melody, strong bassline, fast beat. (5:01)
10. Jazzy synchopated drums/beat, goofy bass, creepy children singing "la la la." Pretty damn trippy. Music for a fun-house? (2:38)
*11. Woozy chimes, strong piano bassline, tight hip-hop beat that morphs over time. Not as “digital” as the rest of the album. (3:32)
*12. Reservedly cheerful vibe, skittering beat, shimmering melody. Later on, song morphs into slower, wistful groove. (3:11)
13. Rumbling ambience, lazy melody, cut-up samples. Methodical beat. (6:28)
*14. Slightly tweaked, tragic piano recording with pulsating ambience and cool scattered beat. So haunting! (5:59)
