Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2005-05-16 | ||
Free-form improvs, with growly spare grunts from three horns (including a tuba!) ... plus a drummer. Not really slow/quiet, but it feels laid back and open, due to lack of bass/chord instruments. Concentration is on interplay rather than a "wall of sound." Music is in that European improv mode, but with more acceptance for keeping the interplay tight -- such as the endings of #1 and #7, which almost seem like compositions. Nice stuff. 1- Bright marching feel 2- Rough-and-tumble aggression 3,4,5 - Small sketches 6- Slowly tumbling 7- Quietly fast/pecking start, very nice midtempo 2nd half 9- Casual jam, a midtempo wandering feel 10- Spare. Weird tuba effect in 2nd half 11- Stacatto goofing around 12- Improv sketch, into drunken regal tones 13- Slow horns. 2nd half faster with brisk trumpet solo 14- The Epic. Slow, quiet start; strong, dramatic middle that gets into an aggressive improv. 15- Small burbles 17- Fairly fast 18- Almost lyrical trumpet. Slow but bright. 19- Warbly and a bit melancholy. Quiet ending. |
