Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2005-05-25
Johnny Dowd returns, this time teamed up as a duo with none other than Brian Wilson (bass, drums, percussion and inimitable production sense). Picking up where he left off on his last cd, he’s ratcheted up the smarmy bluesy redneck-gone-NYC sense for a wild joyride of twangy dark spooky, playful and morose songs. The Brian Wilson influence is almost strange, making Dowd’s compositions twisted beyond comparison. For fans of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, whiskey, guns, and prozac.

1) upbeat near gospel
2) dark rock feel
3) spooky gated reverb on vocs, dark smarmy
4) urgent beat, redneck sadness
5) killer vocal vibrato, big swingy beat, great lyrics, a strange gem
6) strange slow canned organ feel, weird, Brian Wilson all over it
7) truly strange combo of percussion and guitar work, like an acid calypso, wow!
8) swingy big bluesy beat, killer guitar lead
9) here’s the sad bitter Christmas song – he always includes one, this ones a doosy!
10) FCC, a good healthy “fuck you” (easily edited though)
11) swingy dark western twangy instrumental jam
