Album Review

Dusky modern-bop session from the Bay Area percussionist. Mostly good mainstream stuff, although it gets sappy and soundtrack-y in parts (5,8,9). Lea stays mostly in the background, giving trombonist Steve Turre the spotlight -- but be sure to check out the percussion-heavy #10.

- Calm mid/fast; rich '60s sound
- Easygoing but energetic; nice drum solo
- Midtempo, bright
- Slow, calm
- "Love Shuffle," fun, maybe sappy but w/cool ironic title
- Percussion interlude
- Mid/slow, loping, w/some attitude
- Mellow midtempo, sweet w/energetic sax solo
- A cute stroll (James Taylor pop cover)
- African percussion; coolly "world"-sounding jam.
- A capella chant tapping "Motherless Child"
- Mellow and expansive, a capella start
- Relaxed midtempo
- Darkly funky, a nice jam. Vocals call out jazz greats later, summoning the ghosts, I guess.
