Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2005-07-29 | ||
Dusky modern-bop session from the Bay Area percussionist. Mostly good mainstream stuff, although it gets sappy and soundtrack-y in parts (5,8,9). Lea stays mostly in the background, giving trombonist Steve Turre the spotlight -- but be sure to check out the percussion-heavy #10. 1- Calm mid/fast; rich '60s sound 2- Easygoing but energetic; nice drum solo 3- Midtempo, bright 4- Slow, calm 5- "Love Shuffle," fun, maybe sappy but w/cool ironic title 6- Percussion interlude 7- Mid/slow, loping, w/some attitude 8- Mellow midtempo, sweet w/energetic sax solo 9- A cute stroll (James Taylor pop cover) 10- African percussion; coolly "world"-sounding jam. 11- A capella chant tapping "Motherless Child" 12- Mellow and expansive, a capella start 13- Relaxed midtempo 14- Darkly funky, a nice jam. Vocals call out jazz greats later, summoning the ghosts, I guess. |
