Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2005-07-22
Its great when noise elements are injected into "sweet" pop (see My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Breeders, et al) and Bunky does it quite well. One side of this is pure pop, female vocals, heavy melody with standard rock/pop sentiments, even Bacharach'esque horns. But what makes it is their use of fuzz, low quality mics/tape, overdriven mics/vocals, and strange overdubs all at the perfect moments. Really good. Destined to be a KZSU fave, featuring members, connections to Rocket From the Crypt, Pinback/Heavy Vegetable, Black Heart Procession, Castanets, and (drum roll please) Fiery Furnaces. And it shows.

1) straight forward pop, punky with horn section solo
2) slight surf spy darker feel to this
3) starts off ballady quite then kicks into upbeat rocker, title track, then goes back and forth
4) starts off sparse then kicks into noisey rock onslaught riff briefly then into epic girl noise pop sense
5) slow beat, noisy acoustic, with a creedence rip off lick and a feel that reminds me of Bongwater/Daisy Chainsaw
6) pretty standard noise pop a la early Breeders
7) slow sweet ballad
8) a big beat rocker w/ noise bass, noisey guitar, some swirling noise, overdriven female vocals, but still a simple pop sentiment
9) slight traditional vaudeville ballad feel, female vocs are melodic and smokey jazz, though the music feels tongue in cheek, crazy good
10) pretty standard shoegazey pop, slow and introspective strummy, but really nice and an almost chill 70's traditional way to end an album (turn down the lights, fire up the waterbed...)
