Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2005-05-25 | ||
Complex acoustic bop. A mostly mainstream take from Gress, a studio bassist for both normal and avant-garde jazz types. The latter camp is well represented here (Tim Berne on sax!), and this outing shows they can play the "normal" stuff quite well, too. Accessible pieces with themes a bit too complex to whistle afterwards. Really cool. For something similar, but much more mellow, check out Nels Cline's "Angelica" CD, which shows his softer "jazz" side (and also features Berne on sax). 1- Starts quiet and slow; gets into a rollicking, very '60s sounding jam with forceful piano chording. 2- Upbeat, mid/fast. Breezy and bright. 3- Slower but not relaxed. Intense sax solo. 4- Mellow relaxed bop. Slowish, with a stormy climax 5- 1-minute bass solo 6- Mid/fast and tangly. Has a nice swing in parts. 7- Mellow, soft 8- Lurching mid/fast, gets chaotic. Cool piano solo. 9- Slow and lush |
