Rova::Orkestrova – Electric Ascension

Live electric version of Coltrane’s seminal improv work performed by an all-star cast of West Coast improvisers. As you might expect, the group sections are a maelstrom of wailing and feedback, however the solo sections have a surprising dynamic range to them, especially the violin / electronics tracks. The whole disc is excellent, pick any track (except the last one, it’s just applause)
1. Chaotic invocation, slow and ritual
2. Crazed sax solo over full band
*3. Awesome Nels w/ percussion backing
*4. Electronics and effects-laden violin, starts loud but fades quickly to a spooky, reflective section, then builds to end
*5. More cool violin and electronics
6. Wild small group improv
7. Lurching whole band improv
*8. Just creaking violins & drums
9. Nels and electronics
10. Eastern sounding gongs and sustained tones
11. Sax solo
12. Final theme, big group work
