Kahil El’Zabar’s Ritual Trio – Live at the River East Art Ctr
An excellent set of post-bop, Chicago style. Billy Bang is sitting in with the trio this time, contrasting his prickly violin sound with the jazzier Ari Brown on saxophone. Yosef Ben Israel takes over the bass for the late Malachi Favors and keeps the groove tight.
*1. Mellow melodic percussion groove with long soulful sax and violin solos (1:30 of applause/announcements at end)
2. Med tempo swing
*3. Hand percussion with loping bassline and funky horn
4. Poetry
5. Very laid back kalimba-led groove with lots of room to stretch out. Last 5 min or so feature a strange chanting tribute to Malachi Favors.
