The Mae Shi – Heartbeeps (5RC/Kill Rock Stars)
High energy jagged indie rock with a singer who sounds like an almost pubescent male throwing a tantrum. 10 songs in 15 minutes, guitar and bass that often are at odds and lots of start/stop. The closest thing I can compare them to is the Monorchid.
**2. Short quick riffs from the guitar, clear vocals, in this short, nice head nodding track.
**3. Similar idea as track two. Quick start/stop but with drums that are further out and vocals that are more sung. The track comes goes normal and is even catchy.
**5. Is this track 3 again? The difference is the second half of the track, which is more melodic reminds me of mellow early 90s Dischord bands.
7. Somewhat spoken ranting vocals and a silly keyboard centric mellow section. When the track goes back to rocking the sound is more dramatic.
8. Starts quiet with vocals that sound less kid-like, which changes into a melodic poppy sound. Doesn’t rock.
9. Begins with quiet guitar which builds for a while, joined by vocals and simple drums. The track quiets down with short bursts of guitar and vocals and rocks at the end.
10. Poppy and playful with more keyboards. Ends with 15 seconds of near silence and just vocals.
Good stuff -mph
