Craig Matsumoto Reviewed 2005-10-09 | ||
Agile showcases of sax and bass in a duo format. Has the feel of a casual drawing-room session (which is what CIMP recordings basically are). Fefer's sax gets most of the spotlight, spinning fast jazzy runs. Bisio gets a few excellent solos on bass, cf. end of #2. 1- Calm sax over kalimba-like bass pinging. Quiet African feel. 2- Fast slinky theme, really cool, dividing sections of open improv. One earlier phase is groany and slowish; later (about halfway) is a faster exchange with an athletic bass solo. 3- Solo sax, a speedy kind of pensiveness. Later, calm bass pulses and some really fast sax. Ends w/fast bass solo. 4- Gloomy intro into mid/fast brisk walk, upbeat. Stays upbeat from there, with athletic interplay and (last 5 mins) some soulful bluesy sax 5- Really fast flows. Then slower exercises over the intro riff. 6- Solo sax, a thoughtful jazzy statement. Mid/fast. |
