Alien Zoo: Zephanom (Koinkidink)
Rock with theatrical, punk and pop elements. Male vocals that emphasize volume rather than melody. Lots of distortion in vocals. Some moments have rock well. Lyrics lack originality, but show an occasionally witty self-awareness. The music is based upon guitar, but various forms of instrumentation make some cameos. Some electronic effects litter the songs, especially the ubiquitous generic radio noises. Everything has a quirky feel, but not it’s not quite endearing or interesting…just weird. Watered down punk version of The Unicorns???
Best Tracks: 3, 6, 7, 8. No FCCs. Reviewed by
1) “The Pillow Man” –theatrical track with surrealist lyrics. Piano, trumpet, annoying background voices, and whistle. Possibly meant to be ironically obnoxious, although it’s placement in the beginning of the album makes this seem doubtful. Peppy!
2) “Robot World” –straight forward punk rock about materialism and hedonism. Repetitive power chords and simple percussion. Decent male vocals.
3) “That’s What She Wants (NY Girl in Bahgdad)” –piano rock with mostly smart lyrics. Some electric guitar chords and melody. Trumpets near end.
4) “Alien Zoo” –punk rock with saxophone. Bluesy feel, with spacey effects in background. Almost rockability. Inane lyrics.
5) “(I Feel Like) My Face is About to Fall Off” –start/stop dynamic with guitar riff and fuzzy vocals. Then goes into chugging percussion and power chords. Dance-y at 4:49.
6) “Traveling Musician” –hard pop-rock. Catchy vocal magician. Electronic chirps work well. Nice arpeggiated chords in upper register during verses. Goes mostly quiet at 0:25 left, with bluesy riff.
7) “Talking About Yourself” –slower paced simple rock. Cool, but brief, acoustic riff. Soft and laid-back, but with hostile lyrics. Syrupy strings drip freely.
8) “Lesbian Lover” –as stated in the beginning, “this is a punk track”. Self-aware lyrics that alternate with hard guitars. Cool stop/start dynamics at times. Loud.
9) “Punk Chick Traveller” –rockability with electronic chirps. Some piano romping and simple guitar power chords. Repetitive.
10) “I Hear the Fish is Quite Good” –Weird, funky vocals. Description of the life cycle of salmon. Airy and flangey guitars.
