This is a pretty solid look into the capital o’ doom’s current scene. D.C. & Maryland have been pumping out a ton of doom metal/stoner rock for years. A good number of them are on here (& a few classics aren’t: Pentagram, The Obsessed & Spirit Caravan). There’s a lot of big riffs and the requisite sludge tempos (((1))) So-so vocals early 70’s bombast Bonham-like drumming, boogie tempo. A better & heavier Black Label Society? (((((2))))) Heaaavy! Big, badass with snarlin’ biker doom rawk. As if Blue Cheer & Motorhead had baby. (((((3)))) Excellent mix of classic hard rock & doom with Wino’s distant vocals. Battering drumming & rhythm. ((((4)))) Not much of a Sabbath rip-off like before, more like 80’s doom metal ‘ala Witchfinder General with a wah pedal. (((5))) Wailing guitars, heavy breakdowns serious Trouble worship. Mostly so-so. (((6))) Slow, heavy psych/stoner rock instrumental. ((7)) Beefy, “Vol. 4”-ish riffing, winding tempo, kinda goes downhill with the bland vox. ((((8)))) Solid, thick St. Vitus/Witchfinder General mix. ((((9)))) Loud & downtrodden & pained vocals. Thudding & tighly wrapped riffs. (10) W.T.F. ? Danzig joined a stoner rock band? (((((11))))) Slooowww doooom metal! In the spirit of Sleep, Warhorse, Yob. ((12)) More stoner rock with bland to shitty vocals. (Can you stay “It’s almost Stone Temple Pilots?”) (((13))) Mid-paced, weird noodly heavy grunge rock mixed with metal? Not bad but out of place. ((14)) Heavy boogie-rawk that honestly sounds like a stoned out Skynrd. |
