Something interesting that Cooper-Moore said at a show this week (October 2008) ... Mark Gould, who plays trumpet on here, is apparently quite an expert and even *taught* Wynton Marsalis at one point.

But Gould was rejected by the jazz elite in NYC at the time. (Gould happens to be white, for what it's worth.) He's instead built a very good career in classical music. And according to Cooper-Moore, Gould plays classical and jazz better than Wynton.

No idea if it's all true, but it's an interesting footnote. Anyway, that respect for Gould is why Cooper-Moore selected him to play on this album.

Cooper-Moore - Outtakes 1978

Interesting document of the loft jazz scene of the late 70s featuring Cooper-Moore with David S. Ware on sax and Kenwood Dennard on drums. A laid-back session with some great playing from all involved.
Most tracks have studio chatter at the beginning and/or end.

1. Quiet melodic percussion
*2. Nice group free improv
3. Wild sax from Ware
*4. Fife and drum Americana
*5. Slow trumpet and creaking diddly bow
*6. Group free improv (another take of #2)
*7. Bluesy piano/sax gospel fanfare
*8. See #2, #6
9. Version of #3
*10. Version of #1, with a little more groove
11. Sung prayer dissolves into an abstract jam
